Mayim Bialik’s Career Started Back In The 80s

Although nowadays, she is probably most well-known for portraying neuroscientist Amy Farrah Fowler on CBS’ popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory, Mayim Bialik is so much more than this role.

Bialik started her professional career as a child actress back in the late 1980s. Her first roles included the horror film Pumpkinhead (1988) and guest appearances on TV shows such as The Facts of Life and Beauty and the Beast. She also appeared in the music video for Michael Jackson's song Liberian Girl in 1989.

But she didn’t get her big break until 1990 when she landed the leading role in NBC’s sitcom Blossom. From 1990 to 1995, Bialik portrayed Blossom Russo, an Italian-American teenager living with her father and two elder brothers, Tony and Joey.

Following the success of this 90s sitcom, Bialik appeared in Woody Allen’s comedy film Don't Drink the Water (1994) and worked as a voice-over actor for many animated series, including The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Recess, Kim Possible, Johnny Bravo, and Hey Arnold!. She also appeared in the feature film Kalamazoo? (2005) and in a couple of episodes of HBO’s comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Mayim Bialik’s Only Auditioned For The Big Bang Theory To Get Health Insurance

In addition to acting, Mayin Bialik attended college and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience, with minors in Hebrew and Jewish studies. She then went on to get a doctorate in neuroscience. But in 2005, she took a break from her studies to go back into acting.

In 2010, she was cast as Amy Farrah Fowler in The Big Bang Theory. Although this is one of her most popular roles, Bialik has admitted she only auditioned for TBBT to get health insurance. “So I literally figure – I mean, I had a toddler and a newborn and I had been a grad student and my insurance was expiring. I figured if I can just get even a couple of jobs like here or there, I’ll be able to get insurance again.” Little did she know that this role would change her life and career for the best.

Mayim Bialik Met Her Ex-Husband, Michael Stone, In College

Mayim Bialik met her ex-husband, Michael Stone, in a calculus class while she was getting her graduate degree in neuroscience at UCLA. The pair started dating soon after and finally got married in 2003. The Victorian-themed ceremony included traditional Jewish wedding customs.

The couple had two children together. Their first son, Miles, was born in 2005, while their second son, Frederick, was born in 2008. For the most part, Bialik and Stone kept their relationship and family life private, but in 2012, the couple announced they’d be getting a divorce.

Mayim Bialik Still Has A Good Relationship With Her Ex-Husband

After a decade together, TheBig Bang Theory star and her husband got divorced because of “irreconcilable differences." Despite this, Mayim Bialik maintains a good relationship with her ex-husband, Michael Stone.

"Divorce is terribly sad, painful, and incomprehensible for children. It is not something we have decided lightly. The main priority for us now is to make the transition to two loving homes as smooth and painless as possible. Our sons deserve parents committed to their growth and health and that's what we are focusing on,” the actress wrote on her parenting blog shortly after announcing Stone and she would be filing for a divorce.

Over the years, Bialik and Stone have shown they’re great at co-parenting. In 2018, the actress admitted to spending Thanksgiving at her ex-husband’s house to spend this time with their children. Most recently, in 2020, Bialik revealed that she and Stone were working together to keep their kids safe and happy during quarantine.
